Shine a Light on Your Uniqueness

angry jack o lantern

"Hi Generic! Happy Monday!" These are the first words my best friend, Adrienne, read when she opened her email. On a Monday morning. Nobody should start the day, let alone the week, by being reduced to "generic". After her initial shock wore off, she shared the email goof with me via text and we had a good laugh over it.

When I begin working with a new client, one of the most important things we do is explore who the person is, what they want to achieve and how they want to be perceived. A big part of success coaching is helping to clarify what is important and why. Here are 5 questions to help you shed a light on your who, what and why:

1) How would you like for the world to see and perceive you? (ie - if you overheard someone talking about you, what would you like them to say?)

2) What is one thing you would like everyone to know about you?

3) If you had to limit yourself to naming just 3 things that make you unique, what would they be?

4) Why are these 3 things important?

5) If you had to focus all of your time and energy on just 2 goals - one personal and one professional - what would you choose and why?

Take 10 minutes. Answer these questions. Remind yourself of your individuality and what's important to you. In marketing we call this "creating the brand". What do you want your personal brand to be? As a business owner, when was that last time you explored what your business brand is? None of us wants to be "generic".

Shed some light on your uniqueness!

As a complete aside: I've noticed more than the usual typos recently. I'm worried that one of the casualties of the pandemic has been the layoff of proof-readers, editors and copy writers. I don't know if this is true or not, but just this past week I read an email from the club we belong to promoting a Florida State University golf event. At the bottom it said, "go notes", instead of "Go Noles" (short for Seminoles). I sent a quick email to the sender (politely) pointing out the error. Her reply was swift. She apologized and wrote that her original post, "...definitely was meant to sale moles..." and that auto-correct gets her every time. I'm pretty sure she's not selling moles and that once again she wanted to say GO NOLES. I'm grateful for the laughs, but please, whomever is keeping the proof-readers at home - let them return to work, we need you!

Drop The Mic (hopefully not!)

I'm excited that my calendar is beginning to fill with speaking opportunities this year. There are few things I like more than connecting with people. As we are vaccinated and it becomes safer to interact, I'd love to see you at one of these meetings.

Last year my friend Jeff Denney launched a recruiting business and he sent me a Yeti Rambler with his business logo on it. I have shamelessly used that cup every other day (alternating it with my Swell). The Jeff Denney Recruiting Yeti is so cool that I secretly yearned for one with my business' name. Low and behold, look what I got this past week! This beauty is thanks to Cavella Design which is owned by a firefighter and they sell these laser etched Yetis on Etsy and offer a huge variety of designs to choose from!
